- Jesus in the son of God and son of man

When a devout young Jewish woman was visited by an angel, the practicalities of how God planned to save mankind from sin and death were finally clarified. It was to be through a son who would be a mortal man but also one holding a unique relationship to God himself.

Mary was the woman and the Bible relates what she was told:

The holy spirit will come upon you, and the power of the highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that holy one who is to be born will be called the Son of God. 
(Luke 1 v 35)

Though having divine parentage on his father’s side, through his mother Jesus Christ was a member of the human race and lived his life facing the same challenges as we all do. In the gospel records, he frequently refers to himself as ‘the son of man’ as well as, on occasions, ‘the son of God’.

The extraordinary charisma and power he displayed coupled with his message and his actions, inspired thousands during his life and millions since then. Much of this impact was because Jesus spoke words directly from God and behaved in complete harmony with how his Father would act. He explained: 

He who has seen me has seen the Father (John 14 v 9), but he also emphasised that he remained very much subject to God: ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, and to my God and your God.’
(John 20 v 17).

Jesus never sinned. He conquered all the temptations he encountered and, in willingly going to his death, he submitted himself to God’s will and gave his life in a way that offers everyone the opportunity to receive salvation in his name:

Though he was a son, yet he learned obedience by the things which he suffered.  And having been perfected, he became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey him.
(Hebrews 5 v 8-9)

Jesus demonstrated how people can live as children of God. He asks us to follow his example in faith and obedience. Although he lived on this earth as a mortal man, Jesus is now raised in glory and power to be at the right hand of God until the day when he will return as king of the world.
