The Bible is God’s message to us, explaining to us how we can have a relationship with Him, our Creator, and how it is possible to have a hope of life beyond this limited one and into an eternal, glorious future.
One of the reasons we can be sure that this is no ordinary, man-made book is because of the – at times, inadvertent – witness of the Jews.
To give a living witness to His ways and His word, God chose a man called Abraham. He made special promises to him: that he, a childless man, would one day be the father of many nations; that one of these nations would be given the land of Israel to live in; and that through one of his descendants in particular, the means of salvation of all people would come.
The line of the family from whom these promises came true was the Jewish nation.
Their role was to be the custodians of God’s revealed plan and purpose with the world. They were to demonstrate to all how to have a relationship with Him and the best way to live. They were given His laws to follow; when they did, they were a prosperous, caring, well-organised, just society.
However, God warned them that if they did not take their role seriously and failed to show the rest of the world the way to Him, they would pay the price for it: specifically, that they would be removed from their land. This is exactly what happened!
In AD70 the Romans destroyed Jerusalem and the Jews were scattered all around the world. God said that they would be frequently persecuted and hated wherever they went (Deuteronomy 28:36-37). But He also said that despite multiple attempts to eliminate them, they would continue to exist and remain a distinct race, and that eventually He would bring them back to the land of Israel (Jeremiah 30:10-11). Amazingly, and against so many odds, this happened in 1948.
Through the prophet Isaiah, God said to them that whatever happened to them, both good and bad, they would thus be the witnesses of His existence (Isaiah 43:1-12) and the continuation of His plan for the whole world. It is not that they are superior or especially righteous, but their incredible history tells us that God and His Word are true.
