What is the point of being a Christian? Why do people dedicate their lives to following the teaching of Jesus Christ? One of the major reasons is this statement:
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(Romans 6 v 23)
This Bible promise offers us a quite amazing opportunity. Rather than bravely facing up to the inevitable end of our life, we are each offered this extraordinary gift – the chance to live for ever.
Now, looking at the state of the world, who would want to be stuck here for ever? But the Bible explains that God will bring a new world of peace and safety and that is where this promise will occur. It is a very old promise as the inspired apostle Paul explained when he said he lived in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began (Titus 1 v 2). So, this was always what God intended for people who follow Jesus Christ.
Why Jesus Christ? In one of the most famous of all Bible passages we are told:
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
(John 3 v 16)
The phrases everlasting life and eternal life are the same thing! But you’ll notice this is only promised to those who believe in Jesus. So surely it really is worth checking this out – few would want to miss out on such a gift and such a future.
Jesus promised this same gift to all who follow him:
…I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of my hand.
(John 10 v 28)
It is clear he wasn’t offering this ‘there and then’ but in a future kingdom he will bring – something that could occur very soon now.
So, does this mean we’ll miss out if we die before the return of Jesus and the start of this wonderful future age? Not at all. God has infinite power and will not only bring about a new world of peace, ruled by Jesus Christ but will also raise to life those believers who have died before then. We’ll talk about that next month.
