- God calls us to repent and live a new life
The word ‘repent’ may sound old-fashioned, but it simply means to turn around and go in a different direction. Is this required of us all, or only ‘bad people’?
The Bible says we all need to repent because we all naturally think and do what suits ourselves and is in our own best interests. Repenting involves facing up to this self-centred mindset, acknowledging it is wrong and is the root cause of all that is wrong in the world. None of us are free from it. The Bible calls the outworking of this “sin”.
God, however, is entirely right and good, He is “…merciful and gracious, longsuffering and abounding in goodness and truth,” (Exodus 34:6)
We should “trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding;” (Proverbs 3:5). To choose God’s way, realising our own way is flawed, is the second part of repentance.
The Lord Jesus, God’s own son, spent his entire mortal life choosing God’s way, not his own natural desires. Just before he was arrested, tried and crucified, knowing what was about to happen, he prayed, “…not as I will, but as You will.” (Matthew 26:39)
Salvation cannot be earned - it is God’s gift by grace. He is willing to save us and give us eternal life in a new and wonderful world if we follow His way, showing our appreciation of Him. Every believer must repent – to reject our own “wisdom” – and embrace a new life of following God’s ways.
