The Bible explains that God is behind key world events. It summarises it this way:
Surely the Lord GOD does nothing, unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets.
(Amos 3v7)
Those things that God revealed via His prophets are recorded in the Bible, covering virtually every period of human existence from the times of ancient world empires to our current day and beyond. Seeing how prophecies were fulfilled centuries after they were written leads us to conclude that God must exist.
Bible prophecies frequently contain an amazing level of detail; they are far from vague. For example, God declared what would happen to the coastal city of Tyre:
They will plunder your riches and pillage your merchandise; they will break down your walls and destroy your pleasant houses; they will lay your stones, your timber, and your soil in the midst of the water.
(Ezekiel 26v12)
Tyre fell to the Babylonian army in 572 BC, which left the city in ruins, although the inhabitants fled to an island just off the coast, taking their riches with them. The Babylonians found the island impregnable but, in 332 BC, the Greek army leader Alexander the Great swept into the area, determined to obtain their wealth. To enable his siege engines to reach the new city’s walls, he built a causeway, taking the material from the original city’s ruins and laying it in the sea. Thus, the prophecy was fulfilled in incredible detail.
Critics claim the reason Bible prophecies contain such detail is that they were written after the events. However, in some instances, it’s possible to prove that this assumption is wrong. Consider those related to modern-day Jerusalem and the Israelis. Prophecies described how the Israelis would be scattered throughout the world but that they would return to their homeland years later and retake full ownership of Jerusalem. The establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 against all the odds was a fulfilment of prophecies through Bible prophets like Ezekiel (34v13). The Israelis did not have possession of the old part of Jerusalem at that point, although prophecies like this one from Jesus declared that gentile (i.e. non-Jewish) ownership would be temporary:
Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.”
(Luke 21v24)
The prophet Daniel had prophesied that this gentile ownership would end 2300 years after the fall of the Persian Empire (Daniel 8v13-14). That empire ended in 333 BC, so his time period expired in 1967, the very year in which Israeli troops took possession of Jerusalem: a prophecy precisely fulfilled centuries after it was recorded!
Studying Bible prophecies and seeing how they describe key events before they occurred forces us to believe that God must exist. Take a look at them for yourself.
