There is such a thing as 'the truth'

"Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened". That great wit, Sir Winston Churchill, is credited with this amusing observation.

In today's world, it's fashionable for truth to be thought about in a vague, relative way, as something that changes with time, situation and individual. The idea of 'the truth', certainly in relation to a specfic set of religious beliefs, is often viewed as way out of date.

"It's true for me, but it might not be for you".

"That's how I see it".

"It was true at the time".

When we come to the Bible, we're challenged by a Creator who is timeless, unchangeable, constant. Unsurprisingly, His Book suggests that there is such a thing as 'the Truth' about Him, and that He has revealed it in His Word.

Above all, Jesus is ‘the truth’ as well as being ‘the way’ and ‘the life’, for only he can bring us to the Father from whom all life comes (Jn 14:6). This relates to all aspects of our everyday lives, since we are to ‘rejoice in the truth’ (1 Cor 13:6), ‘obey the truth’ (Rom 2:8, 1 Peter 1:22), and ‘speak the truth in love’ (Eph 4:15).

But we also read of ‘the truth as it is in Jesus’ (Eph 4:21), we are to 'receive the love of the truth’ and ‘believe the truth’ (2 Thess 2:10,12), since God 'will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth’ (1 Tim 2:4). It is possible to 'err concerning the truth’ (2 Tim 2:18), and there would come a time when people would 'turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables’ (2 Tim 4:4). It seems, then, that there is such a thing as ‘the truth’ in relation to specific beliefs. I guess that’s why Paul commended his hearers 'to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified’ (Acts 20:32).

So how will you respond to this challenge? Are you open to finding out what the Truth is? As we read in Proverbs, "Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding” (Proverbs 23:23).
