Have you ever had that “flashback moment” when you smell a particular scent or taste a certain food or hear a long forgotten sound or song? In a second you are transported back in time to a period or event in your life to which you associate that sound or smell, and, if you’re anything like me, you allow yourself a few moments of nostalgia whilst you revisit those memories. I had one such moment yesterday when I was listening to the radio and a song came on that I had learnt as a child. That song was “The Streets of London” by Ralph McTell. The song paints a heart breaking picture of homelessness and loneliness and I can remember as a twelve year old feeling great sadness when singing it. Yesterday, when the song had finished playing, the radio presenter commented that the song still resonates with us as it is still relevant today. Even in today’s modern advanced society huge inequalities still exist. According to Shelter, as of December 2019, there were approximately 320,000 people sleeping rough in the U.K, and the current pandemic has caused thousands more to be in fear of losing their homes due to unemployment and economic hardship. Furthermore their website states that since the beginning of the pandemic they have answered over 26,000 calls from households in dire need of their support, guidance and free legal advice. What a terrible state of affairs this is, where there are folk living with extreme wealth whilst at the same time there are people who literally do not know where their next meal is coming from. The divide between the rich and the poor is ever widening and man has no answers to offer. Of course, we should do what we can to offer help and support wherever we have opportunity, as Jesus did in his ministry. Sadly, though, these kinds of problems cannot be solved by human effort alone – there will always be poor and desperate people in this world, as Jesus said of the poor that will always be with us. However, there is a solution, a profound one, and what’s more ….. A permanent, everlasting one! The LORD God has promised a time when there will be no inequality, when everyone will have enough and when the world will be filled with peace and righteousness. There are tonnes of passages in scripture that talk about this time when God will send His son, the Lord Jesus Christ, back to the earth to set up His wonderful kingdom. Here are just a few: Zechariah 3:10 ESV In that day, declares the LORD of hosts, every one of you will invite his neighbour to come under his vine and under his fig tree.” Isaiah 32:18 ESV My people will abide in a peaceful habitation, in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places. Psalm 72:16 NKJV There will be an abundance of grain in the earth, On the top of the mountains; Its fruit shall wave like Lebanon; And those of the city shall flourish like grass of the earth. Isaiah 54:14 NKJV In righteousness you shall be established; You shall be far from oppression, for you shall not fear; And from terror, for it shall not come near you. What hope these verses give us! A sure hope. God’s solution for a world in turmoil. A time when sorrow, loneliness, hunger, inequality and fear will be no more. pershore.bible pershore-christadelphians.org
